OPA Featured in National ASPIRIN 81mg Medifacts Commercial

Date: 2017-09-05

Following the Ontario Ministry of Health announcement regarding Ambulance Communications Officers being able to administer ASA by phone, the OPA was contacted by Bayer Inc with an opportunity to support its ASPIRIN 81mg brand in a national TV campaign focused on educating Canadians about heart attacks and what to do in the event of one. This national TV commercial featured the OPA's Interim Executive Secretary Autumn Belnap (who we are also proud to recognize as an ACP with Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Service).

Featured Elements

Bayer Inc wanted to feature the following elements in the commercial:

  • Signs and Symptoms of Heart Attack
  • Platelet Aggregation
  • The importance of carrying and taking ASPIRIN 81mg in the event of a heart attack
  • Progressive representation of Paramedic Women
  • OPA uniform cresting

Background

In late 2014, the ASPIRIN 81mg brand from Bayer received approval from Health Canada to claim it may help save a life in the event of a heart attack. The approved claim is, “If you think you're having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 and chew 2 ASPIRIN 81mg".

Since then, consumer testimonials were received thanking the brand for sharing this message and even for helping to save the life of a loved one. Consumers also relayed that when paramedics arrived on scene, they often asked if the patient took ASPIRIN.

As such, the Brand Manager, Phyllis Ricotta, saw an opportunity to work with the Ontario Paramedic Association to amplify awareness of this claim and create an important education piece for Canadians. Phyllis would like to acknowledge and thank the following people and organizations for their receptive and effortless collaboration:

  • ACP Autumn Belnap - featured in the commercial
  • St Michael's Hospital - Simulation Lab
  • Hastings County Council
  • Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Service - Chief Doug Socha & Deputy Chief Carl Bowker
  • Darryl Wilton - OPA Vice-President

Coming Soon...

The next phase of this educational campaign will see “ASPIRIN 81MG for Heart Attacks" promoted in pharmacies across Canada.

ACP Autumn Belnap will once again be featured on large creative displays (80" x 30") in the following locations beginning in September:

  • Walmart (national)
  • IDA (national)
  • Guardian (national)
  • Rexall (Ontario & Quebec)
  • Loblaws (Ontario)
  • Sobey's (western provinces)

Look out for this exciting initiative in store!

The Key Message

So please remember… Communications Officers & Paramedics want patients to “call 9-1-1 and chew two ASPIRIN® 81mg in the event of a Heart Attack".
