Federal Budget 2018

Date: 2018-03-15

March 15, 2018

ONTARIO PARAMEDIC MEDIA RELEASE - Federal Budget 2018

Toronto - The Ontario Paramedic Association (OPA) has a primary mandate to advocate for the highest level of patient care and to promote the importance of paramedicine. We represent thousands of paramedics across Ontario who are clinically and emotionally tied to the health and wellbeing of the 1.1 million patients who are treated and transported by paramedics each year.

The OPA applauds the new Federal Budget 2018. We are happy to see that the federal government is taking the opioid crisis seriously and commend them for the $231.4 Million of new money to fight this healthcare situation in our communities. We are especially elated to see that the majority of this money will be directed to evidence-based treatments.

The OPA recognizes that every patient is unique and our paramedics are highly trained to provide exceptional care and clinical skills for a wide range of health issues in any location, day or night.

We commend the government for supporting Canadians with:

  • funding for those with conditions such as autism, dementia, and PTSI
  • stronger smoking regulations
  • financial backing to encourage more physical activity
  • support to help seniors improve their quality of life while also being able to live proudly and independently at home

These elements are needed for some of the patients we care most about.

Finally, the OPA approves of clear language and measures to combat gender-based violence, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Ontario Paramedics too often see the impact that violence has on individuals, their families and their communities. Budget 2018 is a positive step forward for the well-being of all of our patients.

We are encouraged by these measures in Budget 2018 and will continue to support any legislation or resources that best serve patients.
